Postmasters : Is Mail Service At Risk?
According to the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. (NAPUS)
“This is the title of a letter that went out to Congress during our Leadership Conference a couple of weeks ago by our National President Dale Goff. A few excerpts from the letter are as follows: The 41,000 members of the National Association of Postmasters of the U.S. (NAPUS) know that Congress has a deep commitment to quality postal services. Now that Postal Reform legislation has been enacted (PL 109-435), NAPUS believes Congress must reassert appropriate “oversight” regarding the Postal Service. Your nation’s Postmasters are concerned that the USPS is compromising the quality and reliability of mail service, by understaffing local post offices and overburdening the Postmasters who manage them. Chronic understaffing and overburden Postmasters create an unhealthy work environment and has a deleterious effect on the quality of mail service. Late mail deliveries, long lines, reduced window hours, and contentious labor relations are symptomatic of unacceptable understaffing. The three presidents of the management associations will be testifying before Congress on April 17, 2007 to the Postal Oversight Committee.”
A couple of weeks ago, NAPUS reported on hostile work environment in the postal service:
The three presidents of NAPUS, Postmasters League, NAPS wrote to PMG Potter requesting a meeting (held on March 21) concerning the deteriorating work climate that Postmasters, Managers and Supervisors are experiencing in the field. In a letter to PMG Potter they wrote :” Postmasters, Managers and Supervisors are under tremendous pressure, with more requirements, reports, and unrealistic expectations. We are concerned these conditions, if not reviewed at our level, could result in serious consequences. NAPUS also pointed out that “We have a lot of info now on threats, intimidation and retaliation that we will bring forward but we need to aggressively work to stop this form of violence in the work place… ” Letter to PMG (GIF) | President Goff’s Update After Meeting with PMG

So lets get this straight…the first meeting is to address threats, intimidation, and retaliation. Whom are they speaking of, employees or management or both? Would be nice if it was clarified. The way it works in my facility is employees get walked out…management gets a slap on the wrist. Further more, employees have been feeling the pressures for the last 5 years so absolutely…”suck it up!”

Obviously, if management is concerned about threats and insufficient staffing it means it effects THEM. Nothing the vast majority of them do or say is about anything but furthering or protecting their careers. What is most alarming to me is the total disregard for these matters by the carriers’ Union. Supposedly, the Union is wanting to “save” the Post Office. Using that mantra they have simply enabled the current management to continue with business as before for the last five to seven years. Service in our office is dismanl–late leaving times, concealed first class mail, long lines, and no pick up on Saturdays for outgoing mail at any of our large drop-off boxes in the city. Management refuses to hire adequate clerks and expresses no concern for delayed mail. But instead of reporting these events on a monthly basis to outside authorities, e.g. congressman, media,etc, they have joined hands with management to protect the statis quo.
Until the Union starts targeting managers who harrass carriers and exposes the lack of service by these clowns nothing will change for the better. Ask yourself if you would want your kid to take over your job when they enter the workforce. There is no way I would want my child to work thirty years for a company that treats its employees the way this one does.
WAKE UP UNION—you will only save the Post Office when it is reformed from the top down.

The reason there is no quality of mail service
at the Post Office is because of Postmasters and
their supervisors. Our Postmaster is a neat freak, and it is more important to him the the place be clean than efficient. He decided to get
rid of all equipment on our dock so it would be
clean. The result, we have nothing to dispatch
mail in. And we have so many supervisors that
they are tripping over each other. Post Office,
want to save money?? GET RID OF SOME OF YOUR
MANAGEMENT!!! They are nothing but a hinderence
to the flow of mail.

amen to truth’s comments.I am wondering if you work with me at my station?It sounds just like my station!Too many “created management jobs”If it doesn’t involve “moving the mail”get rid of their @**!I see review teams,ams route auditors,district managers postmasters,etc that wipe out of jobs would create some revenue to the carriers that are the backbone of this company.

I am tired of being understaffed and having MY customers wait on line for 35 minutes, when there is one clerk on the window. Management does not care, about customer service. Even when we have 2 clerks on the windows, the line is still long, because one could be doing passports. We have 4 counters available, but only 2 are occupied. Our walk in revenue is down because no one has time to wait on their lunch hour.

I work in a large facility and our managers are constantly fighting amoung themselves. The head MDO tried to put another MDO off the clock. They had a big argument and started going after each other. It was the biggest mess all the employees were just laughing at them. I hope they all put each other off the clock then the mail would start moving through the plant.
