House Judiciary to Hold Hearing on Bush Signing Statements
U.S. Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), new Chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, has scheduled a hearing for next Wednesday, on the issue of President Bush’s signing statements. These are the documents the president has claimed give him the power, as a commander-in-chief, to ignore laws duly passed by the Congress.

This is indeed good news. Rep. Conyers should cut this Administration absolutely no slack. Bush has issued more signing statements (over 700) than all previous Presidents combined. They were usually so rare, and over very technical matters that didn’t interfere with the intent of the legislation, that they didn’t attract much attention.
I am not a leftist; I’m really not even a liberal, as it is understood in the US. I don’t support much of the economic policy of the Libertarian Party, but I’m with them 100% on the issues of individual rights and limited government, in that the state should leave you alone unless there is a very compelling reason not to do so.
