Gerald Ford Statement on Signing the Postal Reorganization Act Amendments of 1976
APWU, NALC /USPS Clarification of Regulations for National Day of Mourning/Observance -The American Postal Workers Union and the Postal Service entered into an agreement to clarify rules for National Days of Mourning when U.S. presidents die. This agreement was entered into to prevent the recurrence of the dispute that followed the death of President Nixon. When President Nixon died in 1994, President Clinton declared a National Day of Mourning and the Postmaster General issued an order to curtail postal operations in honor of the former President. The rules unilaterally imposed by the Postal Service were that any employee scheduled to work on the day of mourning would receive a future day of administrative leave; however, those employees who were not scheduled to work did not receive a benefit.

big bragger,
Gerald Ford did a lot to heal our country during a very difficult time. Your comment was very disrespectful toward a hard working former president and a dedicated public servant. His moral integrity as a president is without equal in my lifetime. I can’t remember the last time I have read anything about his children that wasn’t praise worthy. Above all else, his wife has done more for this country than any other first lady since Elenore Roosevelt. She brought breast cancer to the forefront when people thought it should be kept in the dark because it involved a “breast” and she has done so much to help individuals and families with addiction problems. The Betty Ford Clinic is famous to this day because of its remarkable success which is due to Betty Ford. I think that Betty and Gerald Ford are 2 of the greatest role models I have seen in my life. I too look forward to having an extra day off this new year but I regret the reason. Give a great statesman and his family the respect that they deserve.

Ford pardoned NIXON!
That sez it all.
So, do we geta day off, as for Reagan’s funeral, or not?
Betty Ford was a drunk, Gerald was a bumblinggolfer who pardoned a war criminal and made such behavior acceptable. He was not elected. But neither was GW Bush.

Ford was one of the liars on the warren commission and he pardoned Nixon, can’t be a bigger ass than that.Although he was better at hurting himself than any other president I can think of. He sucked at everything else and the best thing he ever did was get me day off from the crappy post office.good ridence to good garbage.

Ha, Ha . . . you guys are obviously Democrats. All they know how to do is say something bad about someone. Always with the negative. You don’t like the way it is, but have no alternative! But, guess what . . . there have been a far greater number of Republican Presidents elected than Democrats, in the last 100 years!!! So remember, these complainers that always have their hands out, are in the minority . . . ha ha. Remember we’re in charge and we’ll get it back in 2008 along with another Republican President!!!!

So much for the APWU taking care of its own: If you are off Tuesday, then you do not get a day of admin leave in the future, according to that statement. VOTE NO ON THE CONTRACT! WAKE UP, BURRUS!

Union Maid,
I believe that you get another day off if your off day falls on this Tuesday. I think that you have to take the day within 6 months or before the end of the fiscal year.If the end of the fiscal year is longer than 6 months, then you have the longer time frame to take the leave. As a union representative, I think that this is acceptable. Although an official day of mourning is rare, they will always fall on someone’s off day and the appropriate way to handle this is addressed in the ELM and allows employees to have a day off in the future.I do not understand why there is so much animosity regarding the national day of mourning, especially since everyone is going to be given an additional day off with pay. In what way is this a bad thing? Why is the union the bad guy here?
